Do you know how to differentiate pupils as low proficiency in English language? It is an important knowledge for teachers and even parents. We need be patient as much as we can to teach and help them. Before that, we have to know what extents are considered as low proficiency in English language.
 

1.       Poor listening skill
     How to consider they have poor listening skill in their English language? They are not able to respond your questions correctly. In this situation, they usually show “blank” face when answering the questions. Sometimes, they will answer “Yes” or  “No” for every question because they are not understand the language. 
 
2.   Poor pronunciation, rhyme, pace and stress
Most of pupils are poor in speaking skill. Speaking skill includes pronunciation, rhyme, pace, stress and so on. With poor speaking skill in English, they will mix English language with their mother tongue. They are not able to speak formal English language in their daily life.

3.    Spell the words incorrectly
Pupils with low proficiency in English language often spell the words incorrectly. Some of pupils know the meaning of the words, but they are not able to spell the words correctly.

4.    Read dependently
They are not able to read the words and sentences independently. Thus, they have no idea how to read the new words independently by using decoding technique. Sometimes, although they can read the words and sentences, they also not understand the meaning of the text.
